He is Africa's longest serving leader (dictator to some) and now he has ascended to Africa's rotating AU chairmanship. Robert Mugabe will be at the helm for 1 year after election. Known as one of Africa's divisive figures, Mugabe draws both criticism and praise in equal measures.
To his critics, he is a dictator who should retire from politics and let some other young focused leaders take over. But to his admirers, he is a nationalist who sghould be praised for rejecting colonial rule.
In his acceptance speech, Mugabe was quoted as saying;
"African resources should belong to Africa and to no one else, except to those we invite as friends. Friends we shall have, yes, but imperialists and colonialists no more" with lots of praise and applause from his fellow leaders.Mugabe warned that Africa should stand to guard its resources against foreign exploitation.
